Waiting for the Sun, released in July 1968 via Elektra, is The Doorsâ third studio album and their only LP to top the U.S. charts. Recorded between late 1967 and early 1968, the sessions were shaped by internal pressures: the band had exhausted much of their backlog and attempted a more improvisatory approach. The long-planned epic âCelebration of the Lizardâ was largely abandoned in favor of more structured songs, but parts of it survive in âNot to Touch the Earth.â The lineupâJim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmoreâexpands sonic variety here, mixing psychedelia, folk, flamenco inflections (in âSpanish Caravanâ), political lyricism (âThe Unknown Soldierâ), and pop ambition (âHello, I Love Youâ).
Though not unanimously celebrated at its release, Waiting for the Sun has grown in stature as a complex and somewhat transitional work. Its greatest strengths lie in the contrasts between its gentler balladsââSummerâs Almost Gone,â âLove Street,â âYes, the River Knowsââand its heavier, more outspoken pieces like âFive to Oneâ and âThe Unknown Soldier.â The albumâs mixing of accessible hooks with darker undercurrents reflects a band navigating the demands of popularity and experimentation. Today it is often appreciated less as a flawless masterpiece than as a revealing snapshot of The Doors in fluxâambitious, uneven, and compelling.
ReviewsâWaiting For the Sun became The Doorsâ biggest-selling album, largely thanks to the No.1 hit âHello, I Love You.ââ â Louder
âThe albumâs material mixes pop, politics and poetic motifs across its length, raising the figure of Morrison even as it unsettles expectations.â â Best Classic Bands
âThe balance of light and dark, while admittedly unnatural, marks Waiting for the Sun as a different kind of journey than the first two albums.â â Progrography
